Lonán Burke is the firstborn son of a North Side Irish Catholic family from Chicago, IL. His father is a retired officer for the Chicago Police Department and his mother worked as an office manager for a law firm when he was a child before transitioning to a stay-at-home mom after the birth of Lonán's sister. He is the eldest of four — two younger brothers and a baby sister — who all continue to live and work in the Chicago metropolitan area. One brother works as a firefighter, the other as a paramedic, and his sister as a 911 dispatcher.

Growing up, Lonán attended a private, all-boys Catholic school. Despite fitting in socially, excelling academically, and pursuing water polo at the varsity level, he didn't have the easiest upbringing. Lonán often felt out of step with the values of his ostensibly blue-collar family and the Catholic doctrine. By the time he graduated he was eager to break away from his stifling upbringing. He attended a small Midwestern state school, majored in Informatics and minored in Philosophy with the intent to pursue a law degree post-graduation.

Things progressed according to plan until second semester of his senior year. After enthusiastically over-imbibing in his favorite bar's Thirsty Thursday specials, Lonán stumbled his way back to his apartment and collapsed into bed. When he woke up several hours later to the most agonizing headache he's ever experienced in his life, he thought it was the onset of a hangover. And when he blinked and came to again to his roommate looming over him — inexplicably telling him the paramedics were on their way — Lonán couldn't have predicted the sharp turn his life was about to take.

He spent four days in a medically-induced coma, soul unspooled from body, hooked up to a ventilator and watching people file in and out of his hospital room. His childhood priest delivered Last Rites. His family grieved over his still-living body. And then Lonán woke up.

He'd had a freak spinal cord infarction, which had caused paralyzing damage. He spent months in a rehabilitation facility, recovering as much function as he could. The medical event left Lonán an incomplete quadriplegic.

Eventually he did pursue law school and earned a JD in Federal and International Law. He landed a job with the US Department of Justice working on international law cases.

When the Bureau of Anomalous Research was founded, Lonán found himself aggressively headhunted. They plucked him out of the courtroom and sent him back to school to pursue a Doctorate of Sociocultural Anthropology. When he graduated, they named him Principal Liaison for Non-Institutional Expertise, handed him a badge, and told him that it was his job to write the manual.

Through international cooperation, conscientious research, and ethical oversight, BAR supports informed decision-making in sensitive and emergent domains.

Lonán is "responsible for identification, oversight, and ongoing interfacing with non-institutional subject-matter experts whose knowledge derives from lived experience, cultural inheritance, or persistent anomalous contact. Provides terminal ethical approval on issues related to consent, interference, and long-term consequence of Bureau-related activity."

Essentially, he works to recruit, orient, and liaise with laypeople who have demonstrated expertise in the relevant phenomena. This often involves individuals who are viewed as "crackpots" in their real lives due to being self-professed "experiencers," or native or indigenous people of cultures for whom the sacred existence of certain creatures has been a part of their folklore for generations. This also may include vampire familiars and those with metahuman contacts.

OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCE

Since his coma, Lonán has found that in times of great personal stress he is able to involuntarily induce an out of body experience. When this happens, he perceives his consciousness fragmenting from his body and is able to observe what's happening around him as if he's floating above it all. This doesn't mean he's capable of seeing through walls or hearing people's thoughts; he's simply able to disconnect and observe in stunning objective detail everything that's going on in his immediate vicinity. Until he returns to his body, he experiences a state of total serenity and radical acceptance for whatever is happening. He doesn't try to halt or to alter it; he's just present for it.
